Etsy Let's Talk: BNS

BNS Treasuries are everywhere, what exactly are they and why should I be concerned?

If you own an Etsy store, you should entertain the idea of trying BNS!

What is a BNS?
BNS stands for Buy 'N Stay. Simply put a BNS is a treasury that you purchase into a round.

Most BNS' are in rounds with 16 spots available for purchase. The curator (creator) will have rules/regulations for you to follow in order to purchase into the next round. The rules may vary from curator to curator don't be afraid to ask what those rules are! The rule might be that there is a minimum purchase with an amount: ex. $4.00 before shipping. This means that you must spend at least $4.00 on the item or more before the shipping charges in order to get a spot in the next round.
Another rule you will often see is the 'call out before you shop' which means ask the curator if you can shop a certain store. A lot of the time you will see call outs being done as a round is coming to an end.

I'm not dead!

Hello!
I do apologise for not keeping up with the blog. Lately I have just been so tired when I get in from work and dragging my hands to the keyboard (after being on one all day) is hard.

But I did manage to find the neatest bracelet I have seen in a while, it is made out of  polymer clay. I think that is pretty cool, having tried to working with polymer clay before.

Story Time: Never Finish anything

If you didn't already know I am a bit of a 'crafter', I do sew (badly), knit and crochet. And as a 'crafter' I have the habit of not finishing things I start. For instance, in December I started knitting purple socks and then stopped and started a yellow scarf. That yellow scarf was stopped and a crochet scarf was started... and now I have made it my mission to finish these items before I attempt to start anything else!

For the last few weeks I have started finishing those purple socks which are now mittens. From socks to mittens does sound a little strange but I knit socks from the toe up and two at a time-so they morphed really nicely into mittens. Not only did I learn something new about making a thumb hole I am going to finish them!

If you are curious about learning to knit socks I highly recommend Liat Gat's website and techniques she is awesome. Because of her I will never EVER again knit socks one at a time or from the top.

Story Time: Kitchen Renovations

I figured I would have more fun an exciting things to write for this blog... it appears not. To be fair, my life has been turned upside down, shaken and jolted and I will tell you why:
We Contractors are renovating our Kitchen!
This is one of the many before pictures of the kitchen..

We of course started by removing everything from our old kitchen and putting in anywhere there was space. And made a make-shift kitchen in our dining room, that was okay. Then all of a sudden our cabinets arrived a month, not a week or two--a full on MONTH early. To make a long story short, there is little space left in the house right now...and we have eaten a lot of take out food.

As far as renovations go, since I am a total expert having watched more Mike Holmes, HGTV and W Network than any sensible person ever would, the reno has been without to many major problems. Yes we had to get a new flooring, and yes a cabinet was damaged, another cabinet was missing and they also delivered a GIANT cabinet (6ft maybe 6.5ft tall) that wasn't for ours but other than that it is all good. We get to keep that giant cabinet and we have plans to turn it into a coat locker/bookshelf for the dining room.

I really don't want to give too much away but here is a mid-stage photograph of the new Kitchen.

Story time: My Sewing Machine

Singer Style Mate Model 348 c.1967  (The bird is a vinyl sticker I added.)
Meet my first ever sewing machine; Singer Style Mate Model 348 circa 1967. I'll tell you the story of how my Singer and I came to be!

My Aunt (same one who received the shower cap) procured this sewing machine for me, she handles from time to time a website that has items for sale; I asked her to keep an eye out for me. Being that she is a very talented seamstress she was the perfect person to ask, she would get me a machine that wouldn't be to difficult to use and most of all would work. I kid you not, the NEXT DAY after I asked her, she had a procured machine for me.

Turns out she was staging a house and this sewing table was in the way so she moved it and the owner asked her to take it and surprise it had a sewing machine in it!

Did I mention that this machine has come with ALL the original style discs, manual, and some possible-original foot attachments. A little old lady must have loved this machine a lot to keep everything in such good condition, the only thing my awesome Aunt did for me was take it to a local Sewing Machine Tuner to be oiled.

I plan to love and take good care of this machine since it is so lovable, look at the colour?! Who makes sewing machines in that colour nowadays-not to mention it is a very manual machine. Let me add that I am not an expert sewer by any means, my opinion is that newer machines are quite a bit more digital/modern than this machine I have.

Why am I telling you about my sewing machine you ask? Well...

Things I Have Bought Vol #1

When I first opened up my shop on Etsy back in May of 2011, I said that I wasn't going to be someone who spends all her money on other Etsy shops. Yeah-that lasted a few months and now I buy things from other shops on Etsy, which is good!!

This Christmas I made it my mission to buy some really unique items for my family and I thought where else better to look than on Etsy. Since Christmas has long been over I think it is safe to show you some of the amazing items and where you can get your own.

1. Snow Flake & Keep Calm Glass Tile Pendants from Picture Perfect Pendants

These pendants were packaged so nicely that I didn't have to re wrap them! They arrived quickly and they were absolutely perfect; clear image smooth edges and seamless. I was very impressed and I know the people who received the gifts were too.

2.Lens Cap Keeper by Everleedesigns
One thing I hate being asked is 'Have you seen my lens cap?', you have no idea how many times the receiver of this gift has asked me that-well NOT anymore! Thanks to Megan over at Everleedesigns she has these awesome lens cap keeps, you attached the beaded end to your lens and fix the strap to the camera, you will never loose the cap again.

3. Mini Wood Snowflake Ornaments by TimberGreenWoods
These mini wood ornaments were the 'big item' for an Aunt. My Aunt's house features some really lovely woods and these fit her decor nicely, so you bet I bought a set. They came in the beautiful box seen in the image and they were so intricate not to mention affordable!! Something like this if you were to find it in a fancy boutique or gift shop you would pay an arm and a leg. My Aunt loved it, and I know whoever you give this item to will fall in love with it's mini charm.

4. Polka Dot Shower Cap by GiftCreation
Let me start of by saying I would not have thought you could purchase a handmade a shower cap from Etsy that would look this professional and durable. Seriously this purchase was a wonderful surprise, the craftsmanship in the shower cap was amazing and my gift receiver LOVED it. GiftCreation's shop is full of shower caps, knitwear and jewellery all of which I am sure is crafted a beautifully as the shower cap I bought.

5. Professor Moustache Cowl by Pip Robins Accessories
Speaking of well crafted items.... my next purchase from Pip Robins Accessories was a the Professor Moustache Cowl. Let me tell you it gets cold out where the receiver of this gift lives, so this was a no-brainer. Not only was this cowl handmade by a Canadian it was also free shipping!
What more can I say about this item other than it arrived fast, was very professional looking in its design and packaging. If you have a man in your life who is difficult to buy for Pip's store is where you should shop.

6. Embroidered Cards by Sandra's Card Shop
The finally item wasn't really a gift but it may as well have been for how unique and cute they were. I bought eight amazing hand embroidered cards from Sandra's Card Shop. Sandra herself was very fast to respond to my request for a few cards and she gave me a discount!
I gave these cards out to a few close friends as well as family and they loved them trust me if you have someone you need to impress during the holiday season get them one of these cards and write a thoughtful message inside-they will melt! Did I mention that the thread used to embroider these cards is metallic and very Christmassy!!
Currently Sandra has a few of these lovely Christmas themed cards in her clearance section so you can get a jump start on next year at a discount.

Thank you for reading and a special thank you to all the Etsy sellers I purchased from who made my Christmas a great success!

How it's Made: Pinback button

Pinback buttons are not complicated to make!
There are 3 major components to making a pinback button, a SHELL, MYLAR, and PIN BACK (and of course your image).
MYLAR is the protective covering that goes over the image to prevent damage.
SHELLS in essence are the lid of a pinback button, the image and Mylar rest on top of it.
PINBACKS are the 'back' of the button.
To make a pinback button you need Button Press along with the parts listed above. The Button Press has 3 distinct Dies meant for shaping (see the video for an example of how it works).

The first Die is called the 'Pick-up Die' where you put the SHELL, Image and MYLAR go. Pushing the lever down the third Die called the 'Upper Die' holds your SHELL, Image and MYLAR while you get ready to use the second Die.

Rotate to the second Die called the 'Crimp Die' which is where you place the PIN BACK. An easy way to tell the difference between the pick up and crimp is that the Crimp Die isn't on springs.

Finally if you push the lever down using the Crimp Die it shapes the SHELL around the PIN BACK and creates a pinback button.

Check out the video of our Button Press in action!

Story Time: Craft Shows

I have only done a handful of Craft Shows and I can think of one in particular that although horrifying is a great story.
The second Craft Show I was involved in was run by our local Air Cadet Squadron. I arrived around 9:30 am which was the same time as everyone else they had a lot of fantastic vendors (I hope they do it again next year!). Here is where the funny horror sets in; The organisers were a few tables short so Bayleaf Buttons was given a round table, which fit our round pin theme perfectly. I finished setting up the table and sat down to wait for shoppers to arrive and out of the blue.
!!CRASH!!
The front set of legs on this table gave out and folded in without warning or anyone disturbing it, the entire room of vendors went quiet. I honestly was a little embarrassed having so many eyes on me-but hey they all knew that I was there after that! Nothing was broken or damaged, and all the surrounding vendors were kind enough to helping me pick everything up as well as re-sort. I ended up sending one of the Air Cadets outside to collect some rocks, putting them in these little turquoise bags and tying them to the front legs.

My advice to anyone using supplied tables, perhaps sitting or vigorously jumping on the table would prevent table folding problems. Lesson learned!

If you are frequenter of Craft Shows and have an embarrassing story, feel free to share it in the comments :)
